The science
Manuka honey, renowned for its unique properties, is derived from the nectar of the Manuka tree in New Zealand. It contains a special compound called methylglyoxal (MGO), which contributes to its antibacterial and health-promoting qualities. Rich in antioxidants, amino acids, and minerals, Manuka honey supports immune health and offers a distinct, earthy flavor.
To ensure the authenticity and potency of our Manuka honey, we send it for a series of tests at an independent laboratory in New Zealand before packing. Fill out the form above or below to access your test results and receive a simple breakdown on how to interpret them!
The beekeepers
Your Manuka honey was harvested by both founders of Gold Fern Honey, Simon Phillips and Isabelle Davour (it's a two-person family business, so no huge surprise!). Originally from Christchurch, New Zealand, Simon has been beekeeping for 12 years, and Isabelle, originally from Sweden, has been on the journey with him since they met back in 2010. When they're out on the job, a brisk coffee at 4am, followed by a 3.5-hour commute to the West Coast, accompanied by a few podcasts (generally about Manuka honey) and some old school classics, is their typical big day routine.
The Location
Your Manuka honey was harvested from one of our favorite hive sites near a small rural town called Reefton, on the West Coast of New Zealand's mountainous South Island. This area is nestled in the remote bushlands below the Southern Alps. We have a good arrangement with the farmer here; he allows us to set up our hives on his Manuka-rich land, and he benefits from our bees boosting the pollination of his plants, as well as enjoying some free honey and the occasional beer for old times' sake.
